[Sales Photograph Album of a Portland, Oregon Brick Manufacturer]

$850.00
sold out

An album of original photography showcasing architectural uses of the Shope Brick Company's ornamental brick offerings in chiefly in Craftsman-style residential and commercial building in Oregon and adjacent Western states and provinces right around 1915. The first photograph shows a certificate and medal awarded to the firm at the 1914 Portland International Livestock Exposition. The following 24 capture buildings and homes in locations including Portland ; Lewiston, Idaho ; Prince Rupert, B.C. ; Pocatello, Idaho ; Spokane, Washington ; Walla Walla, Washington ; and Corvalis, Oregon. The final 16 capture interior fireplaces in various homes, mostly in Portland.

Shope was founded in about 1913 and produced ornamental brick out of concrete rather than traditional clay. It appears to have been acquired by the Eugene Concrete Pipe Company in about 1923. The aforementioned certificate and a calendar visible on the mantle of one of the fireplace images suggests these photos date to around 1914-1916, as the Craftsman style of home building proliferated in the American West.

[Architecture] : [Photo Albums]. [Sales Photograph Album of a Portland, Oregon Brick Manufacturer]. Portland, Oregon: Shope Brick Co., (ca. 1914-1916). Approximately 11 1/2" x 8 1/2." Commercial album. Flexible leather wrapper panels with stamped gilt text to front: "PHOTOGRAPHS / SHOPE BRICK CO. / PORTLAND, OREGON." Three screw-post binders at left margin holding 41 linen-backed black and white photographs, each slightly smaller than 8" x 10." Prints with brief typed captions and ink stamps of the Columbia Commercial Studio of 107 Fourth Street to versos. Some fraying to linen backing material at edges, mild exterior wear to leather wraps. Otherwise clean, uncommonly well preserved. About near fine overall.
