BLACK RACERS YEARBOOK '74: Official Annual of the Black American Racers Association

$200.00

An uncommonly well preserved and scarce publication of the short-lived Black American Racers Association (BARA), an organization founded in 1972 by four pioneering African-American figures in motorsports, Len Miller, Malcolm Durham, Ronald Hines, and Wendell Scott. A mission statement of sorts is stated in a membership form found on pp.23:

"The Black American Racers Association was formed to give recognition to Black Drivers in all areas of the sport, obtain automotive discounts to members and provide members with what other Black racers are doing across the country."

BARA also published a monthly newsletter though this seems to have been its only stand-alone publication before being dissolved in 1978. It includes profiles of Black racers, current and past, an article on how to obtain sponsorship, numerous full-page ads by major automotive firms (Chrysler, Champion Spark Plugs, National Dragster Magazine, etc...)

This is a hard book to find in commerce and WorldCat notes only three holdings: Emory, NYPL, and the Newark Public Library.

[African-Americana] : [Motorsports]. BLACK RACERS YEARBOOK '74: Official Annual of the Black American Racers Association. Trenton, New Jersey: Black American Racers Association, (1974). 32pp. 11" x 8 1/2" color illustrated stapled wrappers. Light toning to wrappers, stress around binding staples. Solidly very good.
