[Collection of Original Photographs of East German Auto Racing]

$300.00
sold out

A collection of 43 original photographs of (apart from a few dated in the late 1930’s) post-WWII auto racing in Germany and East Germany from about 1950 to about 1955. These are all original darkroom photographs from negatives, vintage to the period. Print dimensions range from 4" x 6" down to about 4" x 2 1/2" (with the majority being about 5 1/2" x 3 1/2"). A majority have stamping from several different professional photographers to the backsides and each one is hand-notated with place, date, rider, bike, etc... to the verso in German.

Identified tracks include West German places like Stuttgart, but the majority are of isolated East German locales like Leipzig, Chemmitz, and most often Hohenstein and its famed Sachsenring Circuit.

The 1950's motorsport scene in East Germany has been scantly documented due to oppressive information policies of the DDR and surviving photography of its cars, drivers, and races are scarce to encounter, particularly in any kind of sizable collection.

A preliminary transcription of print identifications can be seen here.
